What’s Your HR Credibility Rating?

In yesterday’s Advisor, we shared some how-to-lose-your-HR-credibility pitfalls. How many applied to you? Today, more tips and an introduction to a unique online training program.

Building “HR Cred” is a top task for HR managers, although it never appears on any job description. It’s tough to build credibility, but easy to lose it. Here is the last of eight tips from Patrick DiDomenico’s article on HR.com, plus a few of our own.

8. Share confidential and personal information. There’s a strong trust factor in credibility, and once it gets around that you can’t be trusted, you’ll never find out another thing.

And a few more credibility-blowers:

Show ignorance of contemporary issues in the news. Colleagues and management expect you to be keeping up. They are going to ask, “Hey, should we be doing Google, Facebook, and MySpace searches on candidates?” “How is the new law going to affect us?” “What’s all this about Gen Y and Gen X?”

Show ignorance of company rumors, issues, and happenings. HR managers need a network to stay current. You don’t want to be the last to find out what’s going on.

Cut corners. A lot of times, the right way isn’t the easy way, but
once you start cutting corners, or let one manager cut a  corner, the example is set for everyone else.

Failure to train. You know the rules and the guidelines but that doesn’t mean much in the trenches where managers and supervisors are making HR decisions every day. You have to transfer your knowledge to them through training.

Unfortunately, training’s a hassle–authorizing, planning, delivering, tracking–and it’s easy to let this critical priority slip.

BLR has created a unique and helpful solution called the Employee Training Center (ETC)
This turn-key service requires no set up, no course development time, no software install, and no new hardware. Your employees can self-register, and training can be taken anytime, anywhere (24/7) with nothing but a PC and an Internet connection. Courses take only about 30 minutes to complete.

Just as important, the Employee Training Center automatically
documents training. As trainees sign on, their identifications are automatically registered. When the program is completed, the trainee’s score is entered. So, when you want to see who has or hasn’t yet trained on any subject, or look at the across-the-board activity of any one employee, it’s all there, instantly available to you, your boss, an inspector–even a plaintiff’s attorney.

These are all motivational, actionable programs – both for employees and supervisors — in such key areas as sexual harassment, FMLA, diversity, communication, USERRA, recruiting, and many more. The courses are kept up to date to reflect federal and state regulatory changes, and, what’s more, we add new programs continually.

Course certificates can be automatically generated from within ETC, and are automatically retained for record-keeping purposes.

The Employee Training Center also includes a similar selection of safety courses–you decide whether you want just the HR courses, the safety courses, or both.

And, from the standpoint of your CFO (a truly important standpoint in these tight times), you always know exactly what training will cost, no matter how many programs you use or how many times you use them. There’s just one low annual fee–for unlimited training–calculated by the size of your workforce. Budget once and you’re done!

If it sounds like we’re excited about this new service, well, we are–and we think you will be, too. We urge you to sign up for a no-obligation demo by visiting the new Employee Training Center. Or, feel free to call our customer service people at 866-696-4827.
