HR Strange But True

Is ‘Highly Qualified’ Highly Ineffective?

Have you recently interviewed a self-described “highly qualified” applicant? What about a “team player”? According to a new OfficeTeam survey, if you play a part in the hiring process, it’s more than likely that you may be sick of hearing these terms.

The survey was developed by OfficeTeam and was conducted by an independent research firm. It is based on telephone interviews with more than 1,300 senior managers at companies with 20 or more employees in the United States and Canada.

Executives were asked, "What is the most overused or meaningless phrase you see on résumés?" Below are some of their top responses:

  • Highly qualified
  • Hard worker
  • Team player
  • Problem solver
  • Flexible
  • People person
  • Self-starter
