HR Strange But True

This Man’s Journey for Jobs Is a Honeymoon!

In a slight twist on the Mike Rowe media franchise of working all kinds of jobs, Hourly America, a website presented by Snagajob, is sending “career insights” blogger Heath Padgett across the country where he will work at different jobs in each state through the Snagajob database. What’s “strange” about this story is that the trip will also be Heath’s honeymoon with his new wife, Alyssa!

Although Heath is a recent college graduate, the jobs he works are all hourly. He says he wants to “help break certain stigmas that exist about the hourly employment industry.”

In a CNN feature, the couple stated they had lived in Texas their entire lives and wanted to see the country, rather than just moving out to California to pursue writing careers. So they decided that documenting their journey would be ideal. But paying for such a trip was problematic, until Heath got the idea to contact Snagajob, which resulted in the HourlyAmerica blog. They also asked their wedding guests to help fund their trip through GoFundMe in lieu of gifts.

His coast-to-coast jobs, where he job-shadows a worker for 1 day, have ranged from lifeguard (Nevada), housekeeper in a motel (California), yoga instructor (Connecticut), bread baker and deliveryman (Wyoming), meat handler at a Hog Stop (Iowa), apple picker (Vermont), and fish fryer (Maine).

He and his bride are still on the road, with the RV-based honeymoon expected to last 7 months. Then the newlyweds will take to the air to visit Alaska and Hawaii.

But is this honeymoon romantic? Padgett told CNN that “it’s not exactly sipping mimosas on the beach, but we love every minute!”

  1. I’m curious about how much they get paid–do they get the rate these employers normally pay and does Snagajob supplement their income?
