HR Strange But True

Angelina Jolie Award Could Give Birth to Lawsuit

When you hear the name Angelina Jolie, what comes to mind? Big lips, famous husband, Good Samaritan, the list is endless! But would you associate her name with maternity leave? A radio station in Australia does.

The Southern Cross Austereo, which runs Mix 94.9 and Hit 929 radio stations, frowns upon maternity leave by displaying a giant jar of condoms in the Perth, Australia, office. To make matters worse, the company even gives out an award to employees who have benefited the most from other people’s pregnancies.

Hence, the Angelina Jolie Award. Named after the actress who has adopted three children from three separate mothers across the globe. The award was created to reward employees who have flourished in more senior roles made available by women on maternity leave.

Linda Wayman, a boss for the stations, has said, “That is a big area of focus for me, encouraging people to have sex with condoms.” The company is currently facing their own labor pains, with nearly one-third of the 100 employees out on maternity leave. But don’t think too poorly of Wayman just yet!

Chief executive of Southern Cross Austereo, Rhys Holleran, has defended Wayman’s actions. “She has an exemplary record as one of Perth’s most compassionate advocates on all issues surrounding equality of women in the workforce,” he said.
