HR Strange But True

Don’t Monkey Around with This Job

If in your current job, you are stressed because you always feel like you are constantly “herding cats,” then you may want to consider moving to India, where you can get a job chasing monkeys.  Well, at least you would be outside all the time.

In New Delhi, brazen primates have recently started invading exclusive neighborhoods looking for food—they will break into houses and clear out refrigerators and cupboards, reported Mashable Business.

Lots of “messes,” high-pitched screaming, and fear of attacks/rabies had residents complaining to the local government, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) about the situation.  Since culling the monkeys was out, and sterilizing the simians was seemingly impossible to accomplish, the NDMC decided on a solution—hiring people to chase away the monkeys.

With a large pool of unskilled labor available, it was easy for the NDMC to find takers for the job, even though it only pays $100 per month. Monkey chasers were assigned to posts in infested areas. Then residents could call a help line and the assigned chaser would scare away. Some tried by imitating the cry of larger monkeys—unfortunately, the larger monkeys were attracted by the calls! Others relied on good old-fashioned arm waving. The use of slingshots is discouraged, except in extreme cases.

For those workers who want to improve their pay, wealthy families are hiring private monkey chasers to work exclusively on their property. However, Mashable says the demand for monkey chasers is increasing, so it seems like a pretty steady job.
