HR Strange But True

Sleeping Interns Become Next Internet Sensation

Internships are a great way for college students to gain some real-world job experience, but for some, internships are a great way to catch up on some much-needed sleep after staying up all night studying for finals. And when sleeping interns get caught in the act, they could end up becoming the next Internet sensation!

Take Kory, for example, an intern for iris Worldwide in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Becca, a copywriter for the company, Kory “is an extremely hard worker; a full-time student who manages a part-time internship.” And this heavy workload caused him to accidentally catch some z’s while on the job. Unfortunately for Kory, “When you’re part of the family, you’re treated like family, which is why when … Kory succumbed to his mid-afternoon sleepiness … the creative team pounced,” Becca added. And boy did the creative team do some terrific work!

Kory’s face was photoshopped into many iconic scenes, that appear on Mashable.com. Kory appears as Kate Winslet with Leonardo DiCaprio on the bow of the Titanic, as Voldemort from Harry Potter, and as Princess Leia with Han Solo in the newest Star Wars movie. And Kory was a great sport about all of it! He says he was “just brainstorming with his eyes closed.”

Another Internet sensation comes from Montreal, Canada. Eduard was on the second day of his internship with Gsoft when he fell asleep at his desk with his mouth wide open. Unlike Kory, Eduard suffers from slight anemia, so when he felt tired he leaned back and woke up 20 minutes later surrounded by his laughing coworkers, who in the meantime had taken a picture of the entire office surrounding the sleeping Eduard.

However, Eduard was the reason he became an Internet sensation! He posted the photo of himself sleeping, surrounded by his coworkers on Reddit, and the PhotoshopBattles subreddit took charge in adding Eduard’s face onto ridiculous images. Eduard can be seen lurking behind Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, as Homer sleeping on the job, and as Paul McCartney singing solo.

Eduard told CBC news, “It doesn’t really bother me—I’m not naked, I’m not getting shamed, I’m just surrounded by amazing people who are having a blast!” Eduard says he’s not worried about this effecting his career. “In all honesty, I have my reputation to lean back on,” he said. “I’m the president of a student society, I’m a good software architect, I’m known for many other things than sleeping—and hey, if it’s funny, it’s worth sharing.” Eduard and Kory have had great attitudes about the whole thing, but I think it’s time they got back to work!
