Tuition assistance should be easy enough to structure and offer, but it's not. We found a number of tricky questions that companies must answer before offering it. So for today's survey, we decided to find out just what companies are offering and how they are structuring their plan. (And we'll give you the survey results, right here, in a few weeks.)

For years, BLR® has surveyed HR and benefits professionals to see what benefits they are actually offering. This year, we have expanded our survey program by conducting a series of brief, targeted benefits surveys.

Today's Survey Topic: Tuition Assistance

Here are some of the picky issues we're going to probe:

  • Which employees are eligible for tuition assistance? (Full-time, part-time, exempt, non-exempt?)
  • Does the course have to be part of a degree program?
  • Must course topics be related to the employee's work?
  • Does reimbursement cover books, lab fees, etc.?
  • Do employees need to receive a certain grade to qualify for reimbursement?
  • Is there a length of service requirement?
  • Are graduate level courses eligible for reimbursement?
  • How about informal sources of classes such as Dale Carnegie?
  • Is there a maximum amount reimbursed per year?
