Wal-Mart Workers Go Back To Court

Just months after an Alameda County jury slapped Wal-Mart with $172
million in damages for denying employees legally required meal periods, workers
have now gone back to court seeking damages for missed rest breaks. The
employees charged that Wal-Mart stopped requiring workers to clock in and out
for rest breaks when it became aware that understaffing was interfering with
employees’ ability to take these legally required breaks. Because of the company’s
practices, one in 10 employees at Wal-Mart’s California stores don’t get paid for missed
rest time, they charged. Under California
law, an employee who is denied a rest break is entitled to an extra hour’s pay
for each missed break.
