Employer Pays For Child Labor Violations

Two ShopRite supermarkets
in New Jersey
have shelled out $198,407 to settle U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) allegations
that the markets, owned by Perlmart Inc., violated youth labor regulations. DOL
investigators found one supermarket improperly permitted 82 youths to load and
operate a cardboard baler and 3 to operate a dough mixer; the other market allowed
55 youths to operate a cardboard baler. At both markets, minors worked more
hours than federal child labor regulations permit.

Federal law prohibits
employees under age 18 from working with cardboard balers and dough mixers. Youths
who are 14 and 15 cannot work more than 3 hours on school days or 18 hours in a
school week; when school is not in session, they are limited to 8 hours in a
day and 40 hours a week.
