UPS Settles Meal Break Suit For $87 Million

United Parcel Service
(UPS) has announced that it will pay $87 million to settle charges that the
company denied required meal and rest breaks to approximately 20,000 California drivers. The
settlement grew out of a class action lawsuit filed in 2003 alleging that UPS always
deducted one hour from drivers’ time sheets for a lunch break, even though many
drivers couldn’t take the full hour meal break—or even rest breaks—because of
delivery deadlines. The suit also claimed that UPS didn’t provide a second meal
break to provide drivers who worked 10- to 12-hour shifts.
