According to the California Office of Emergency Services, you can take a number of simple steps to help protect workers in the event of an earthquake. For example:

  • Secure desktop items like computers and printers to the surface they sit on with buckles and safety straps (allowing for easy movement of the units when needed) or with hook and loop fasteners glued to both the table and the unit.
  • Keep heavy items off the top of cabinets or file drawers.
  • Attach latches to file drawers to keep them from flying open.
  • Support hanging ceiling lights or fans with a cable bolted to the ceiling joist.
  • Hang framed pictures from closed hooks so they can’t bounce off.
