Payroll Error Leads to Big Direct Deposits–And Criminal Charges–For Nonemployee

Investigators and
auditors at telecommunications firm Avaya in Basking Ridge, New Jersey,
discovered that, because of a payroll system error, the company mistakenly
direct-deposited payroll checks into the account of a man who never worked for
the company. The deposits amounted to more than $469,000 over four years—and
the individual never reported the mistake to Avaya. Now, the nonemployee,
Anthony Armatys, has been arrested at his Illinois
home and faces criminal charges in New
Jersey
for payroll theft.

The problem began when Armatys was offered and accepted
a position at Avaya but then rescinded his acceptance before starting work. The
payroll system apparently never got word of this and  deposited payroll checks into his personal
bank account.
