The EEEC is a
multiagency task force designed to root out California’s
“underground economy” by enforcing California
labor laws and educating business owners and workers about those laws and
regulations in workshops held statewide. Launched in 2005 by Gov. Schwarzenegger,
the task force makes unannounced enforcement sweeps, targeting businesses that
have a high incidence of avoiding labor, tax, and licensing laws; safety and
health regulations; and workers’ comp insurance requirements. The EEEC’s
current hit list includes garment, agriculture, construction, pallet, auto body,
car wash, and restaurant businesses.
