How One Company Trains Its Managers

Dominium (www.dominiumapartments.com), an apartment community management and development firm, has been running Dominion University for several years. A key program offered through Dominium University is Community Manager Continuing Education, which is similar to the orientation course, but geared toward upper-level, advanced supervisors as a refresher course, she says.

Dominium University also features other classes that fall into one of seven “colleges”: Property Management, Accounting, Compliance, Marketing and Leasing, Career Development, Legal Basics, and Maintenance.

With approximately 170 locations in multiple states, it is impractical to bring every employee to the home office for training. So, trainers often travel to outside offices to provide training on such topics as marketing and leasing, workplace diversity and ethics, sexual harassment prevention, and safety, Adair says. Online training is also offered for several courses.

Dominium brings managers together in a leadership conference every other year in Minneapolis and in regional mini-conferences in alternate years. The focus is on helping managers be more strategic, become better leaders, foster a team environment, and become acquainted with their colleagues and the home office team, according to Adair.

Training has helped boost retention at Dominium and made employees more likely to reach out to get their questions answered, according to Adair. “They are much more open to calling people at the home office.”

You know your managers could do a better job if they were trained, and now there’s a convenient and reasonable way to get it done—BLR’s Leadership Library at the online, 24/7, TrainingToday. Get More Information.

Tips for Success
Adair says it is important to look for ways to improve training and to update the curriculum as needed. “Industry needs are constantly changing, and so we need to make sure we are ahead of that curve.”

She also recommends evaluating training-related rewards to make sure they are actually incentives for employees. For example, offering a company sweatshirt to employees who attend a certain amount of classes might seem like a great idea—unless employees do not want a sweatshirt.

How is your company doing with training new managers in all the myriad skills they need to contribute to your company’s success? Are they making mistakes from lack of training? Do they have time for adequate training?

There’s no doubt training can be a hassle—authorizing, planning, delivering, tracking—and it’s easy to let this critical priority slip.

To solve this problem, BLR has created a unique and helpful solution called TrainingToday.

This turnkey service requires no set up, no course development time, no software to install, and no new hardware. Your employees can self-register, and training can be taken anytime, anywhere (24/7) with nothing but a PC and an Internet connection. Courses take only about 30 minutes to complete.

Just as important, TrainingToday automatically documents training. As trainees sign on, their identifications are automatically registered. When the program is completed, the trainee’s score is entered. So, when you want to see who has or hasn’t yet trained on any subject or look at the across-the-board activity of any one employee, it’s all there, instantly available to you, your boss, an inspector—even a plaintiff’s attorney.

These are all motivational, actionable programs—for both employees and supervisors—in such key areas as sexual harassment, FMLA, diversity, communication, USERRA, recruiting, and many more. The courses are kept up to date to reflect federal and state regulatory changes and, what’s more, we add new programs continually.

The Leadership Library, for example, provides you with a sensible (and economic) solution.
