HR Strange But True

Good News: HR Degrees Are Worth It

More good news for the HR pros: That degree was worth it.

We recently wrote about human resources (HR) making Forbes’America’s 15 Most Surprising Six-Figure Jobs” list. Now the HR profession has made another list: Salary.com’s “8 College Degrees That Will Earn Your Money Back” list.

Coming in at #6, HR majors are described as “the gatekeepers to organization.” For HR managers, the return on investment (ROI) for a degree earner attending public college is 137 percent. For private college, the ROI is 41 percent.

Under the same umbrella of HR majors, compensation and benefits managers had a slightly higher ROI: 149 percent for public college and 45 percent for private college.

Other majors that made the list include IT, marketing, and engineering.

  1. But do employers see the value of the HR degree? I’ve worked at places where HR was handed off to people who had no experience, like the former office accountant.
