HR Strange But True

Minding Employees’ Hearts During the Holidays

Holiday parties can be a great way to show your employees’ you appreciate them and inspire a sense a camaraderie at your company, but the gathering can also bring forward a host of HR issues related to alcohol, religious issues, or even sexual harassment.

A new infographic looks at a—perhaps underestimated—threat at holiday office parties, heart health.

Depending on your company’s stance, seasonal parties can often involve rich foods and alcohol (nearly half, according to a recent BLR® survey), which aren’t the most heart-healthy.

According to the graphic, most employers are having a holiday party; however, only 3.5 percent of companies have an automated external defibrillator (AED).

“When businesses have AEDs and emergency response programs in place, a company’s workforce is not only protected during the holidays, but every day of the year,” said John Ehinger, CEO of CardioReady, the company behind the infographic.

According to the statistics, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) kills over 350,000 Americans a year. But those promptly treated with an AED and CPR are 9 times more likely to survive.

Do you have an AED in your workplace?
