HR Strange But True

EPA Official Wastes Hours Viewing ToXic Websites

Employees of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are supposed to study things that are nasty. But as an agency official was spending way too much time on his computer on a shared website, a special agent who walked by got a toxic surprise.

EPA’s inspector general just reported to the U.S. House of Representatives on employee misconduct, and this incident was cited.  The career official was actually viewing—and storing—up to 7,000 files of pornography on his work computer on a shared server, spending as much as 2 to 6 hours per day on this “activity.”

The matter has been referred to the Department of Justice for prosecution.

Watching X-rated websites wasn’t the only computer transgression found at the agency; the inspector general also reported computers being used for wage theft, various types of fraud and bribery, abuse of authority, harassment, counterfeiting, and other criminal and ethics violations.

  1. Can we assume this employee was terminated? And don’t they measure productivity at the EPA? You’d think 2-6 hours would cut into a worker’s output (so to speak).
