HR Strange But True

Majority of Workers Feel They Are Overweight

More than half of workers (55 percent) categorize themselves as overweight, according to a recent CareerBuilder® survey. Does the job have anything to do with it? Survey says, maybe.

Job level: Forty-four percent of people in management roles have gained weight in their current job, compared to 38 percent of people in nonmanagement roles.

Industry: Some industries seemed more susceptible to weight gain, with IT at the top (50%), followed by Government (48%),
Financial Services (46%), and Health Care (42%).

Location: The survey also found that where you work could play a role in on-the-job weight gain. Nearly half (44%) of respondents stationed in Western states said they’ve put on weight at their current job. They are followed by the Northeast (40%), the South (37%), and the Midwest (37%).

The study shows that physical fitness may have some influence on how people are treated at the office. Nearly one in five workers (18 percent) feel that people who are thin and fit are shown more favoritism in their workplace.
