HR Strange But True

Mail vs. Male vs. Female—Who Wins the Snail Mail Race?

If you thought so-called snail mail, with its envelopes and postage, was a relic of the past, a new study shows it’s still slowing down office workers with its tedious, time-consuming chores. However, a new survey shows that one gender is a bit better at getting it out than the other.

In fact, a national survey conducted for first-class real-mail service Postalocity.com of 1,000 front-office administrative staffers who regularly prepare and send mail reveals that one batch of mail, such as monthly invoices, takes 2 hours, on average, to prepare for mailing.

And respondents cited these problems occurring with mailings as the most onerous:

  • Printer jams
  • Misaligned printing on labels
  • Out of supplies, like paper, ink, and envelopes
  • Getting back undeliverable mail
  • Printing address upside down

The survey also revealed that there may be a gender gap when it comes to doing mailings: results show that female staff spend 10 percent more time preparing office mail than do their male counterparts!

On the other hand, females may put more prep time into the job, as men are 24 percent more likely to not have the necessary supplies on hand and ready for a mailing.

“Our survey found that office administrators universally dislike the mundane task of having to prepare mail, like invoices,” says Bryan Pulliam, president and founder of Postalocity.com. “Worse, this task is taking them way too much time, especially in the high-tech world we enjoy today.”

And—no surprise—no gender likes licking the envelopes!

  1. This is definitely one of those “studies” where you want to consider the motives of the sponsor. Also–who in this day and age is licking the envelopes on batches of mail?
