If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say … Definitely Don’t Tweet It!

The old adage—“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”—definitely rings true for social media, as it would in the real world. However, why is it that people still haven’t grasped this concept? With more and more employers screening social media, you would think current and prospective employees would be more careful about what they post.

During the 2016 NBA championship, a real estate employee was terminated after he took to Twitter to rant about the Golden State Warriors being in Cleveland. Fair enough, when two teams play, not everyone in the team’s home town is going to love having the opponent there … but taking your hatred out on the opposing team’s family members … well that’s just wrong!

The real estate employee tweeted to Sydel Curry, sister of Steph Curry from the Golden State Warriors, warning her (and the whole family) to get out of Cleveland. It didn’t take long for the Internet to oust him to his employer, prompting the real estate company to issue a public apology to the Curry family and ultimately ending the employment of the deranged fan.

Unfortunately, the employee didn’t learn a lesson in this case, tweeting, “Why is everyone doggin [sic] steph curry on Twitter but when I do it I get fired,” followed by five laughing-so-hard-I’m-crying emoji. Some people never learn.…
