Soft Skills and Emotional Intelligence Development

Moving into 2019, we’ll see even more companies invest in developing their employees with communication skills, emotional intelligence skills, and leadership skills. In fact, according to one CareerBuilder® survey, 71% of employers said that they valued a candidate’s emotional intelligence (EI) skills over his or her IQ. And moving forward, employers are much more likely to hire and promote individuals with developed EI skills.

Upskilling Current Employees

According to research conducted by Deloitte, the average half-life of a skill in our new digital age is only around 5 years. It’s now becoming even more important to continually upskill your existing employees so that you don’t waste a lot of money hiring and terminating employees who don’t have the appropriate skill sets.

Mobile Learning Platforms

According to research gathered by Ambient Insight, the U.S. mobile learning market will reach $2.1 billion next year, and global mobile learning revenues will reach $14.5 billion. And as organizations adopt BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies, flexible work options, and further engage in the gig economy, the need for reliable mobile learning infrastructures for competitive organizations will skyrocket.

Blended Learning Opportunities

While investing in mobile learning platforms will be critical in 2019, so will investing in blended learning opportunities that entail in-person instruction. Even though learners love mobile content, in-classroom instruction is still chosen 22% more often than other modalities of instruction and is still viewed as the most effective type of instruction in the workplace.
So, invest in mobile infrastructures to compliment your in-classroom instruction and programs, but make sure you still offer valuable in-person learning opportunities.

Leadership and Management Training

According to information compiled in a post published on LinkedIn® Learning, three out of four employees report that their bosses are the worst and most stressful part of their jobs, with 65% of employees saying they’d take a new boss over a pay raise. And a whopping 85% of executives aren’t confident in their leadership pipelines.
Additionally, according to surveys parsed by Entrepreneur, 87% of first-time managers wished they would have had more training before becoming a manager and don’t feel as if they’re ready to be leaders even though 99% of those companies surveyed said that they offer management training.
Overall, more and more employers will begin investing more heavily and strategically in their leadership pipelines, and you should too. For even more information on this, read 4 Tips for Coaching New Managers.
Make sure that you’re investing in the right things for your L&D department for 2019, and include the items listed above and in yesterday’s post in your budget.
