A survey of over 1,000 workers in the United Kingdom found that 85% have fudged on an expense report to receive more money. Even more disconcerting is that the survey also found that 5% of employees falsify or inflate every report they submit!
The survey was commissioned by expense management software firm Webexpenses. A white paper on the survey says the practice costs the UK over $154 million (U.S.) per year, but companies still are devoting little time or effort to review expense reports or validate the charges and/or are still using old-fashioned paper reporting even with modern computer programs. Therefore, the practice of “fiddling with the figures” is tacitly tolerated.
And 82% of respondents reported they have never been caught cheating! Moreover, shame and guilt for cheating their employers did not run rampant among respondents to the survey.
