Large-scale race bias lawsuits are the latest legal problem facing a number of high-profile employers.
A race discrimination case filed against Microsoft by an African-American former account executive could expand into a $5 billion class action lawsuit. Rahn Jackson claimed that the software giant repeatedly denied him promotions because of his race. Now a lawyer who brought race bias cases against Coca-Cola and Walt Disney Co. is seeking to spin Jackson’s case into a lawsuit on behalf of hundreds of black Microsoft employees who charge they faced discrimination in promotions, compensation and evaluations, and suffered retaliation when they complained. Microsoft says that it doesn’t tolerate discrimination, and that racial imbalance is a problem for the entire computer software industry because of the shortage of minority high-tech workers. And another lawyer who assisted in the $200 million Coca-Cola case is representing three employees of Delta Air Lines in a race discrimination lawsuit. The workers charge that they were denied promotions and treated unequally because they are black.
