In the September 2005 issue of the California Employer Advisor, we reported that several powerful unions had broken ties with
the AFL-CIO, the nation’s main labor federation. Last week,
the defecting unions formally founded a new AFL-CIO rival, called the
Change to Win Federation. The new federation represents 5.4 million
American workers and comprises the Teamsters, Service Employees
International Union (SEIU), UNITE HERE, United Food & Commercial
Workers, the Carpenters, the Laborers, and the United Farm Workers.
Following this rift, the AFL-CIO now represents about 9 million American
workers.
The new Change to Win Federation, chaired by SEIU treasurer-secretary
Anna Burger, says it will seek to organize millions of U.S. workers and will
spend hundreds of millions of dollars on its unionizing efforts.
