A new lawsuit highlights the dilemma for employers when domestic violence spills over into the workplace. Tammie Heleniak claims she was fired from her temporary administrative assistant position at Hewlett Packard in Roseville after informing her supervisors that her estranged husband had threatened her. And now she’s filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Hewlett Packard Co. and Manpower Temporary Services. Manpower allegedly told Heleniak that she was being terminated because she “created a perceived security risk.” And Hewlett Packard purportedly represented that she could save her job if she got a restraining order, which she did about a month before the termination. In response to the suit, Manpower says it did its best to accommodate Heleniak, but that it had to take steps to protect all employees from the threat of violence.
