According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), truck drivers and nursing aides were the two occupations in private industry with the highest rate of injuries and illnesses requiring at least one day away from work in 2002. The BLS reports that there were 1.4 million total workplace injuries entailing at least one day away from work. Strains and sprains were the most common cause of the 112,200 injuries suffered by truck drivers and the 79,000 injuries to nursing aides. Other occupations with high rates of injuries requiring time off were nonconstruction laborers (76,600 cases), construction laborers (49,100), and janitors and cleaners (42,000).
