Safety: Governor Signs Cell Phone Law

Governor Schwarzenegger has signed S.B. 1613, which will make it an infraction to drive a motor vehicle while using a wireless phone unless a hands-free device is used. In particular, the new law, known as the California Wireless Telephone Automobile Safety Act, prohibits driving a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone, unless the phone is configured to allow hands-free listening and talking and is used in that manner while driving. Violations carry a fine of $20 for the first offense and $50 for subsequent offenses. The law will take effect on July 1, 2008.

We’ll have full details on this new law, including its implications for employers, in an upcoming issue of the California Employer Advisor.
