The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has announced that it has reached a $20 million settlement of a race discrimination class action filed by the agency against national drug store chain Walgreens, which is based in Illinois. About 10,000 class members will share in the settlement proceeds.
The EEOC’s lawsuit alleged that Walgreens discriminated against African-American retail management and pharmacy employees with respect to promotions, assignments, and compensation. In addition to the monetary relief, the settlement prohibits store assignments based on race.
In connection with the resolution, Walgreens stated that it is pleased to reach a resolution and that the company does not tolerate discrimination in any aspect of employment.
