Bush Plan For Kids’ Insurance May Force Cuts In California

President Bush has
recommended increasing funding for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program
(SCHIP) by $5 billion over five years and restricting enrollment to children
from households with incomes that do not exceed 200 percent of the federal
poverty level. This proposal has been the subject of some controversy in California as state
officials estimate that it could cause 600,000 children in the state to lose
health insurance over the next two years. Bush has pledged to veto proposed
compromise legislation that would seek to expand SCHIP by $35 billion over the
next five years and bring total spending on the program to $60 billion.
