Naval Academy In Hot Water Over Missed Lunches

Even the government has
wage and hour troubles. A federal arbitrator has ordered the Naval Academy
to pay about 80 current and former employees for missed lunch breaks. The
employees worked at the Naval Academy’s Officers’ and Faculty Club Restaurant in Annapolis, Maryland.
The union representing the employees estimates that the payout for the missed breaks
could reach $100,000.

The problem stemmed from
the time-clock system in use, which automatically deducted 30 minutes a day from
an employee’s time for a meal break. Employees had to report when they didn’t
take the allotted break on a form to get paid for working during that time instead.
However, as the arbitrator noted, the system wasn’t perfect; some employees
didn’t know they had to fill out the form to report a missed break and thus got
shortchanged on their pay when they worked through lunch.
