Hours of Service Limits Retained for Truckers

The Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued an interim final rule that will
continue to limit truckers to driving only 11 hours within a 14-hour duty
period, after which they must go off duty for at least 10 hours. The interim
rule was issued in response to a recent federal appeals court decision that
vacated, effective Dec. 27, 2007, key provisions of the hours of service rules.
The FMCSA issued the  interim rule to
reinstate those provisions to ensure there was no gap in coverage while it
works on formulating a final hours of service rule. The agency says that the
11-hour limit has improved safety levels since implemented in 2003 in a
controversial move that increased driving time by one hour but also expanded rest
period requirements. For more information, visit www.fmcsa.dot.gov.
