Family Leave Beyond FMLA—What’s Really Happening?

By BLR Founder and CEO Bob Brady

For years, BLR® has surveyed HR and benefits professionals to see what benefits they are actually offering to employees. This year, we have expanded our survey program by conducting a series of brief, targeted benefits surveys. The findings of these surveys are analyzed and presented free to all respondents.

Correction: In last week’s 401(k) article, the number of employers not offering a 401(k) shou d have read 7 percent. We regret the error.

Today’s Survey Topic: Family Leave Practices

There’s a lot of talk about family responsibilities discrimination and also much interest in how to handle the steadily increasing number of requests for time off to deal with family issues. For this survey, we decided to find out just what employers are offering their employees:

  • How much paid and unpaid leave, other than FMLA, do employers offer for spouse care? For child care? For elder care?
  • What sort of programs are offered to assist with family responsibilities?
  • How are benefits and seniority handled during leaves?
  • May employees use their own sick leave to care for others?

Take this brief survey, and see how your existing practices and future plans stack up against those of the country’s most successful companies. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete, and it will help you stay on top of your industry and keep your organization competitive.
