Back in the good ’ole days, when a cat was stuck in a tree, you called the fire department to have it rescued. Now, you call them and they tell you that it’s not their business anymore! So who do you call? Ghostbusters …? No, that won’t work! How about your local highway superintendent? In a small town in Massachusetts, that’s exactly what happened, except the man ended up losing his job over the good deed.
One day during a bad storm, the man’s girlfriend called to ask him to come rescue a cat that was stuck in the tree. So, being the Good Samaritan that he was, he brought out the town bucket truck and rescued the cat. However, the story doesn’t end there!
After rescuing the cat, he got the bucket truck stuck in mud and had to call another town employee to help him get it out. The town employee came out, helped him with the truck, and then immediately called his supervisor to complain. It turns out the cat was stuck in a tree that was not within the town’s limits—it was several miles away—and if he hadn’t gotten the truck stuck he’d probably still have his job!
The town, for which he was employed, decided to suspend him for 2 weeks. However, the selectman declined to renew his contract, which ultimately ended his 20-year employment. The man believes that rescuing the cat was not a breach of ethics and should not have cost him his job, especially when he would have done the same thing for any other town employee. Next time, just leave the cat in the tree, it’ll come down on its own!
Or call Animal Services.
Shame on the girlfriend for bothering the hw superintendant. Shame on the city for not understanding the good deed.
What’s become of this world? Awful people!
