After declaring a state of emergency in 44 counties because of this winter’s storms, Governor Wilson signed an executive order suspending daily overtime requirements for private, non-union employers in the counties affected. The goal is to help businesses recover from the disaster by allowing the use of flexible work schedules. Employees can work more than eight hours daily without having to be paid overtime. But for hours in excess of 40 in a week, they must still be compensated at the overtime rate. The order went into effect January 10 and will likely be rescinded county by county as conditions improve. To find out if your county is covered and if the order is still in effect in your area, call your county Office of Emergency Services or the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services at (916) 262-1816
