The Internal Revenue Service has just issued temporary and proposed regulations designed to reduce the tax filing burden for small business owners. As of Jan. 1, 2006, eligible small employers will be able to file the new Form 944 (Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return) once a year, rather than filing Form 941 (Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return) four times a year. Employers eligible to file the annual return are those with estimated annual employment tax liability of $1,000 or less.
The new Form 944 and instructions will be available on the IRS website (http://www.irs.gov) by the end of this month.
For more information, businesses can contact the IRS at (800) 829-0115.
