The California Fair Employment and Housing Act prohibits employment practices that discriminate on the basis of age (40 years or older), race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition (e.g., record or history of cancer), marital status, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, and gender), and sexual orientation. The Act covers all public employers and private employers with five or more employees.
Note that it is also unlawful for an employer to discharge, expel, or otherwise discriminate against someone because the person has opposed any of the discriminatory practices listed above.
