Electronic Arts, headquartered in Redwood City,
will pay $14.9 million to settle a class-action lawsuit charging that about 600
current and former computer programmers in the company’s California studios were entitled to overtime
compensation. The programmers alleged that Electronic Arts had the “common
policy and practice of classifying all engineers as exempt from the California overtime laws—while
at the same time being assigned to duties incompatible with exempt status.” In
connection with the settlement, which is awaiting approval in San Mateo County
Superior Court, Electronic Arts maintained that it has properly paid employees.
Last year, Electronic Arts agreed to pay $15.6 million to settle an overtime
lawsuit by a group of current and former graphic artists.
