Census Bureau Finds Decline In Wages





According to a new U.S.
Census Bureau publication— Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in
the United States: 2005
—the inflation-adjusted median earnings (also called
“real median earnings”) of both men and women who worked full time, year-round declined
between 2004 and 2005. The real median earnings of men dropped 1.8 percent to $41,386
in that time period, and the real median earnings of women decreased 1.3
percent to $31,858. In 2005, women earned about 77 cents on the dollar as compared
to men, which was about the same as in 2004. At the same time, real median
household income increased by 1.1 percent between 2004 and 2005, reaching
$46,326. Notably, 2005 marked the first year since 1999 in which real median
