Comments Sought on Proposed Changes to Form I-9

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is inviting public comment on proposed revisions to Form I-9, the form all U.S. employers are required to keep on employees to document that they are eligible to work in the United States. Comments will be accepted until May 29.

Key revisions to the form include:

  • Expanded Form I-9 instructions and a revised layout.
  • New, optional data fields to collect the employee’s e-mail address and telephone number.
  • New data fields to collect the foreign passport number and country of issuance. Only aliens authorized to work in the United States who also have recorded their I-94 admission number on Form I-9 will need to provide the foreign passport number and country of issuance. (The I-94 shows how long an individual is allowed to stay in the United States.)

Comment on the revisions.

The current version of Form I-9 is available at www.uscis.gov/I-ocentral. Information on a new Form I-9 will be posted there after it’s finalized. Until a new version is approved and posted, employers must continue to use the current version of Form I-9.

  1. What is the purpose of having someone’s phone number and e-mail address? The company that I work for have numerous employees that cannot afford a computer or a home phone.

I, personally, do not think the I-9 needs these revisions or any other revisions
