Individuals who have long been in the majority classes for race and ethnicity may now find themselves in the unfamiliar territory of a “minority” in some states. The changes in population present an interesting—if not complicated—problem for contractors with affirmative action responsibilities.
Recent census data reveal that there are four states where “minority” populations are actually the majority. Those states are Hawaii, New Mexico, California, and Texas.
In addition, all populated territories of the United States have “minority” populations as the majority.
According to a report based on recent census data and written by affirmative action expert and attorney, John Fox:
- 11% of U.S. counties (mainly in the Southwest, where the number of Hispanics—the country’s fastest growing population now totaling 16% nationwide—is expanding very rapidly) are now “Minority-Majority.”
- 7% of U.S. counties will, in coming months/near years, be “Minority-Majority.”
- 20% of counties in the United States will very soon be locations where “Minorities” are the majority population.
I live in NM and see the minorities as the majority. I have also seen the discrimination against races if you are not hispanic in the workforce.
