HR Strange But True

Reader’s Story: The Refrigerator Vandal

It’s finally time for your lunch break. You go to the fridge, open the door, and … where did it go? Having your lunch disappear from the fridge is an aggravating (and according to a recent poll, not all that uncommon) experience. However, coworkers aren’t always to blame.

In this story, submitted by a reader, we hear about an unsettling account of an employee’s reaction to his lost food.

“During his first week of employment, it appeared a new hire was not going home at night. He was packing the refrigerator full with groceries and possibly working all night or sleeping in his office.

“Every two weeks the cleaning people empty the refrigerator and discard anything not marked SAVE.

“Monday morning we came in to work and the ladies were very scared by what they found. The refrigerator had been marked with the word SAVE all over it with Sharpie®, inside and out, in large and small words, on every drawer and door of the refrigerator.

“Apparently when he found his food had been discarded, the manager of our facility told him he needed to write SAVE on his food to prevent it from getting tossed. He was so angry he wrote it everywhere. The scary thing is, against the advice of HR, we kept him a few more years and had many more stories to tell.”
