HR Strange But True

Hottest Workplace Perk a Cut Above the Rest

Sure, Silicon Valley workers are used to superior perquisites, from gourmet dining to concierge services. But the hottest workplace perk, says Marketwire, is a cut above the rest—subsidized haircuts.

Companies do want their employees to look well-groomed at work (hence all those dress code and personal hygiene policies). So companies are working with vendors to bring superior, well-trained stylists into the workplace to give haircuts on-site for a reduced price—or even for free.

Employees may select their own style, including buzz cuts, but Mohawks and other free-form or half-shaved styles are discouraged. And processes such as permanents, coloring, and highlighting are usually not available.

However, it’s not just the savings that make this perk so popular. Scheduling salon or barber visits around work hours can be daunting, so convenience is key. Another hot convenience-based perk is on-site car washes and the long-time favorite, on-site gyms.

  1. I’ve always been curious if on-site gyms are worth it–or are they like gym memberships in general, where people sign up, go regularly for a month or so, and then drop off?
