Interviews seem to be the source of many HR Strange but True! stories. There were the dance auditions, the preemptive request for leave to pick up a mail-order bride, and even calling a spouse mid-interview to check what’s for dinner, just to name a few.
Here’s another to add to the list, courtesy of an HRSBT reader:
The last leg of our interview process is a behavioral interview that the Human Resources Department administers. It is a series of difficult, thought-provoking questions. The last question is: “Tell me a joke.”
[This] determines whether candidates are able to quickly switch gears and think on their feet.
We usually get a “knock, knock joke” or an “I can’t think of one” response; however, one time, we had a candidate tell us a joke that had all of the “red lights” in it. It included religion, racism, AND nudity! Yes, nudity. We were appalled.
