Almost one-third (31 percent) of U.S. employees are concerned about losing data at work, but many engage in activities that put company files at risk anyway.
And more than one-third of those surveyed at companies with 101 to 500 employees admitted to engaging in risky behaviors when it comes to company data, according to the survey by TeamViewer. One quarter of workers at companies with fewer than 10 employees and nearly a quarter of employees at companies with 10 to 50 employees reported such behavior.
Employers can help protect data by educating employees about security protocols for electronic devices.

Here are some tips to pass along based on the most common risky behaviors identified by TeamViewer:
- Lock your computer when leaving your desk.
- Do not click on links from unfamiliar senders.
- Avoid sharing passwords with coworkers, friends, or family.
- Do not view questionable content on company devices.
- Remember to store data on the company’s server.
These precautions are so important for protecting company data that it’s a good idea to do initial as well as repeat or refresher training at various times, including:
- During orientation training for new hires;
- When employees get a new computer or mobile device;
- When employees begin a telecommuting arrangement; and
- Other times as you deem appropriate in your organization.

- Outline the data protection precautions in your employee handbook.
- Send an e-mail with the precautions to employees’ new computers or mobile devices.
- Go over how to perform the precautions during a training session if employees need training on their new devices.
- List the precautions in your telecommuting arrangement agreements.
- Consider other delivery methods that you deem appropriate and useful in your organization.
