It’s a job that really starts at the bottom, but applicants are flocking to apply. Why? The jobs are at the bottom of the planet—in Antarctica—at the so-called Penguin Post Office!
According to Good Morning America, the post office at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island in the Antarctica is looking for four people to work at its post office. No, the place is not as isolated as you might think—certainly not like the jobs HRSBT wrote about on Mars. The abundant wildlife draws thousands of tourists, which, in turn, generates over 70,000 postcards to be mailed each year to over 100 countries!
The job description issued by the employer, the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust, for the 5-month “summer jobs” from November to March, includes a “can-do attitude,” environmental awareness, a passion for the Antarctic and penchant for penguins, and the physical strength and coordination to carry heavy bags of mail across slippery rocks to and from the ships.
The job pays about $1,700 (U.S.) and comes with room and board.
Applicants do not have to be citizens of the UK and no previous post office experience is needed. The application deadline for the 2015–2016 season has passed.
But if you are thinking of applying for the 2016–2017 season, just be aware that the entire area of the post office and quarters is about the size of a football field.
They’d probably get more applicants if they made a reality show out of it.
