HR Strange But True

This Workplace Wear Can Give You a Real Charge

Employees may be flaunting their wearable technology, but until now it’s all been accessories and no apparel. Well, other companies want to get involved in this profitable trend, and their new wearable-tech items will give workers a charge!

According to media reports, Microsoft® has paired up with British fashion designer Adrien Sauvage to create men’s slacks that can charge a cell phone while they are being worn. ABCNews reports these smarty pants have a plate incorporated into one of the pockets that generates “inductive charging, which uses an electromagnetic field to transfer electricity between two objects” without wires.

To recharge the plate, workers just use a standard USB cable. However, the price of the stylish slacks may give workers a shock—the slacks start at $340 a pair!

Female employees who want to charge their phones with their clothes get a price break. The New York Daily News reports that California-based Joe’s Jeans is producing “designer denims” for women that charge phones—for only $189 per pair.

The jeans have a hidden pocket that discreetly hides a custom battery and cord, costing $49 extra. Joe Dahan, the brand’s founder, told NBC Today that the jeans “offer a sleek, stylish way to keep women charged and connected while on the go.”

And retail analyst Marshall Cohen told Today that “the future of fashion includes ‘smart functionality,’” and jeans seem the logical item of clothing to start the trend.
