When Cigna Corporation concluded its Preventive Care Survey of insured employees, there were a few results that were surprising and concerning. Perhaps the most shocking was that only 45% of respondents knew that they should have an annual checkup—but 85% knew that their pets should!
This revelation—plus the findings that only 50% of respondents knew their blood pressure reading or cholesterol level, and only 20% knew their body mass index (BMI) or triglyceride levels—put into question what people know about preventative care.
The survey revealed one probable explanation—only a third (33%) of employees who have health insurance use it toward preventative care; the others only use it when a specific health problem arises.
