HR Strange But True

Will You Be My … Surrogate?

Has a boss ever asked you to do something that has nothing to do with your work? According to a new study, it’s not that uncommon. Nearly 25 percent of workers studied reported that their bosses have asked them to perform tasks that are not related to their jobs.

The CareerBuilder® study dug a little deeper and discovered that not only are some requests outside employees’ job descriptions, occasionally, they are completely inappropriate for the workplace.

For example, would you ever ask an employee to be a surrogate mother for you? It happened to one survey respondent … on more than one occasion!

Here are a few more odd requests from bosses:

To be prepared to delete all e-mails and computer files at a moment’s notice
To buy a rifle for him, and he would reimburse the employee
To lend him $400 for a down payment on a car
To remove her stitches
To bail another coworker out of jail

And, last but not least, one boss even asked an employee if she knew anyone who could “hook him up” with illegal substances. (Inappropriate and illegal!)
