Joseph Neubauer had not missed a Yankees home game in 38 years. He would book his vacation days and days off to correspond to the Yankees’ home schedule. But a rainstorm ended his streak—and his job!
CBS NewYork/WFAN reports that the city employee had, as usual, taken September 18, 2013, off to go to the stadium, but a rainstorm forced cancellation of the game. So on September 19, the rescheduled game date, Neubauer was faced with breaking his streak or not showing up for work without permission. He chose the Yankees.
Unfortunately, the article says, this was not the first time his pursuit of the streak had gotten him in trouble. He was suspended in 2010 for calling in sick 13 times during the season on game days. And he was also suspended in 2011 for flying to the All Star game despite having his request for vacation denied.
Ironically, Neubauer told the station he likes his job and really wants it back. But it looks like he didn’t like his job as much as he likes those Bronx Bombers.
Wow–hard to believe this guy even had a job to lose after those two suspensions!
