It’s not breaking news. Sitting all day at work can take a toll on your health. One study tracked the health of 123,000 Americans between 1992 and 2006 and found that men and women who sat 6 hours or more per day had a much higher overall death rate (overall death rate was around 20 percent higher for men and 40 percent higher for women).
Recently, there’s been a workplace trend to try and get employees out of the office chair and into a more active workstation. You’ve probably heard about standing desks, stability balls, and treadmill desks, but what about “Pedal Power”?
Entrepreneurs, featured in Fast Company, are trying to bring attention to their dynopods—or pedal-powered work surfaces—that use the pedaling power from your legs to charge your workplace gadgets or other nonwork appliances.
Does this mean you can ditch your cycling classes and get your workout done during work? We’ll see. They are still in their funding stage on Kickstarter.com. Their goal is to raise enough funding to enable them to produce high-quality, open-source build plans with step-by-step instructions.
I’d love to hear about other employers’ experiences with stability balls and standing/treadmill desks.
